Best Performance Chip for the Toyota Tacoma: 3.5 V6, 2.7 and 2.4 Turbo

Thorton performance chip and its box on desert rock beside a grey Toyota Tacoma kicking up dust, headlined 'Best Performance Chip for the Toyota Tacoma: 3.5 V6, 2.7 and 2.4 Turbo'.

Ask a third-generation Tacoma owner what they would change and most say the same thing: the 3.5 V6 feels flat off the line and the transmission hunts for gears. A plug-in performance chip addresses the first half of that directly. By keeping the ECU in the more responsive part of its throttle map it makes the pedal answer sooner and firms up the mid-range, and because the transmission responds to throttle input, many owners find the truck holds a gear more willingly too. The Tacoma is Thorton’s second most-tuned Toyota after the Tundra, and TRD Off-Road owners are the largest single group.

What a chip changes on each Tacoma engine

3.5 V6 (2016 to 2023)

The change is mostly throttle response and the 2,500 to 4,500 rpm mid-range, which is where the 3.5 feels weakest in stock form. Owners describe it as the truck no longer needing a big push of the pedal to get going. Fuel economy gains show up on highway commutes when driven the same way as before.

2.7 four-cylinder

The 2.7 has less headroom but responds in the same way: a sharper pedal and better mid-range. Stage 2 is a sensible choice for a 2.7 used mainly in town.

2.4 turbo i-Force and i-Force Max (2024 on)

Turbocharged engines have the most to gain. The chip brings boost in earlier off idle and sharpens throttle mapping. The hybrid system on the i-Force Max is untouched.

4.0 V6 and older engines

Second-generation Tacomas with the 4.0 gain a firmer throttle and better mid-range; the chip is configured for Tacomas back to 1996.

Why a plug-in rather than a flash tune

Toyota ECUs are tightly locked, flash options for the Tacoma are limited and expensive, and every flash increments the counter a dealer reads. A Thorton chip never writes to the ECU, cannot exceed the factory limits because the ECU still enforces them, and unplugs without a trace before a service visit. That fits a truck people buy to keep for fifteen years. The warranty detail is in Does chip tuning void your warranty?

Which stage Tacoma owners choose

Of the Toyota chips shipped in the last year, 87% were Stage 3, 9% Stage 2 and 4% Stage 1. Stage 3 targets up to 60 extra horsepower and the strongest throttle response. The stage guide compares them.

Installing on a Tacoma

The OBD2 port is under the lower dash to the left of the steering column, behind a small hinged cover on 2016-on trucks. Engine off, plug in, start, confirm the three LEDs, drive a tank. Full steps in the installation guide.
