The Toyota Tundra is Thorton’s most-tuned Toyota, and the 5.7 V8 is the reason: it is a strong engine with a soft factory throttle map, which is exactly the combination a plug-in chip improves most. The newer twin-turbo i-Force Max responds even more, because turbocharged engines have the most headroom. The 5.7 has plenty of torque but a pedal that asks for a lot of travel before the truck responds. A Thorton chip keeps the ECU in the more responsive part of its map, so the throttle feels immediate and the mid-range arrives earlier. Owners who tow campers and boats report this as the main change, along with a modest economy gain on highway commutes when driven the same way.
Turbo spool is where the chip helps most. Boost comes in earlier off idle and the 2,000 to 4,000 rpm range firms up, which reduces the pause you feel pulling away with a trailer. The hybrid system is untouched; the chip works on the combustion engine’s signals only.
Both gain a sharper throttle and stronger mid-range. On the 4.0 the change is mostly drivability rather than peak power.
Toyota’s ECUs are among the more locked-down, flash options are fewer than for domestic trucks, and a flash increments the counter a dealer reads on a warranty visit. Most Tundra owners bought the truck for its reliability and do not want to change the calibration at all. A plug-in chip never writes to the ECU, cannot exceed the factory limits, and unplugs without a trace. It is the tune that fits how Tundra owners think about their trucks.
