Best Performance Chip for the Ram 1500: HEMI, Pentastar and eTorque

For a Ram 1500 that is daily driven, tows, or is still under warranty, a plug-in OBD2 performance chip is the sensible first upgrade: it sharpens the HEMI’s throttle and mid-range, installs in a minute, and leaves the ECU’s factory calibration untouched. Over the last twelve months the Ram 1500 with the 5.7 HEMI has been the single most-tuned vehicle in Thorton’s catalogue, ahead of every Ford and Chevrolet truck, with more than a thousand chips shipped for that one engine.

What a chip changes on each Ram 1500 engine

5.7 HEMI V8 (2009 to 2024, and the eTorque mild hybrid from 2019)

The HEMI’s factory throttle map is deliberately soft in the first third of pedal travel, which is what makes a stock Ram feel lazy pulling away with a trailer. A Thorton chip keeps the ECU in the more responsive part of that map, so throttle response is immediate and mid-range torque arrives sooner. Owners who tow report this as the biggest change. The eTorque version behaves the same way; the chip works on the combustion engine’s signals and does not interfere with the 48-volt system.

The Pentastar responds mainly in throttle response and a livelier 2,500 to 4,500 rpm range. It is the engine on which Stage 2 makes the most sense for a commuter truck, because Stage 3 can feel eager in traffic.

Heavy-duty owners see the same throttle and mid-range improvement, and the 6.4 has the most headroom of the HEMI family. The Ram 2500 6.4 is our second most common Ram fitment after the 1500 5.7.

Plug-in chip or flash tuner?

A handheld flash tuner rewrites the Ram’s PCM and can change anything in the map, including transmission behaviour. It also increments the PCM’s flash counter, which is what a dealer’s diagnostic tool reads when a warranty claim comes in, and it typically costs $400 to $700 before you buy any custom tunes. A plug-in chip cannot exceed the factory limits because the PCM is still enforcing them, costs $40 to $100, and unplugs without a trace. If your Ram is out of warranty, has supporting modifications and you want a custom map, a flash tune is the bigger tool. For everyone else, the chip does what most owners actually want from a tune. The OBD2 port is under the dashboard below the steering column, slightly to the left. Engine off, plug the chip in, start the truck, and confirm the PWR, OBD and ECU lights come on. Drive normally for a tank so the chip adapts. The installation guide has photos and troubleshooting.
